Specific Need
Our program has a specific need for dollars to cover the processing costs associated with the deer donated to our program both during the annual hunting seasons but especially in the Northern Virginia areas where there are continuing herd management efforts being conducted throughout each year. Having these dollars available affords us the opportunity accept these deer so that this resource can be used to provide essential high protein venison to food banks, missions, churches, food pantries and other feeding programs in the Loudoun, Fauquier, and throughout the Northern Virginia area.
Mission
To provide, on a nonprofit basis, food for those in need by donating professionally processed venison through agencies organized to provide feed to the needy who participate with the Hunters for the Hungry program.
Profile
The Virginia Hunters Who Care, Inc., Hunters for the Hungry, program was founded in 1991 and has been in operation for over 32 years. It was established to assist feeding programs and distribution locations with acquiring essential lean red meat for the diets of men, women, children, the elderly, the homeless and veterans they serve throughout Virginia. The program accepts donated deer from hunters, farmers, and through herd management efforts. These deer are accepted by the program and are professionally processed, skinned, cut, wrapped, and frozen. The meat is then distributed to participating feeding programs and distribution locations at no cost to them. This helps to support the already strained budgets of these agencies and allows them to provide this important high protein to the clients they serve at no charge. In Loudoun County the program provides venison to 11 different feeding / distribution agencies and in Fauquier venison is distributed to those in need through 3 major feeding / distribution programs. Last year alone the program processed and distributed 34,580 pounds, 134,888 serving in Loudoun County and Fauquier County. This was up 47% from 2022 and the need continues to increase. The Virginia Hunters Who Care, Inc. program began in 1991 and has been serving the Northern Virginia areas and the entire state of Virginia for 32 years. To date it has processed and distributed over 7,924,626 pounds, 31,698,504 quarter pound servings to feeding programs in Loudoun and Fauquier counties and throughout Virginia.
