Despite the 'model minority' myth/stereotype prevalent in the US, South Asians are an underserved population and are diverse in culture, religion, and language. In fact, South Asia is home to 650 living languages. However, South Asians often face challenges due to cultural and linguistic differences.
What sets Ashiyanaa apart is our cultural competency and ability to relate to the clients we serve without judgment: we have advocates and/or volunteers that speak most of the languages in the region - Our client advocates share and appreciate the diversity in cultural beliefs amongst our clientele; our advocates and volunteers are very familiar with the various family structures, customs, and marriage & family laws that our clients are often bound by. Due to this understanding, we can provide person-centered, culturally sensitive services with regards to all aspects of the client’s needs, goals, and preferences.
We utilize a strengths-based approach to support our clients and build on their resilience, growth, and development. This, along with our Career counseling 1:1s, Chai & Chat support group for seniors, women’s support group for Domestic/Interpersonal Violence survivors, legal and/or financial counselling referrals, and mental health in-house and/or outsourced referrals to other South Asian practitioners form the core of our services.
At Ashiyanaa, our light is always on...
