Profile

What is a newspaper doing asking for voluntary contributions? Why is the public suddenly seeing ads and receiving social media communications asking for financial support for the acknowledged information leader in Loudoun County that has been around seemingly forever?  Why now?

Along with the ever-changing media landscape, Loudoun Now too has changed and has become a nonprofit (under the umbrella of Loudoun Community Media). Your community newspaper now depends not only on advertising revenue, but also voluntary contributions from people like you to guarantee it has what it needs to always be there for you, always be there to cover the local stories in Loudoun County that you care about.

And, remember we don’t require subscriptions. Loudoun Now is free to all . At Loudoun Now we don't charge for our content. Our print newspaper and our website and our everything you need to know about what’s happening in our county, Get Out Loudoun, are all provided free of charge. You never pay a dime for Loudoun Now.

Why? Because we believe there should not be barriers to learning about the actions of your government leaders or other information about the place we live and the people we live with. After all, we don’t pay our neighbor for the information she gives us at the coffee shop, do we? Of course not. We don’t believe you should pay for the information you get from your hometown newspaper either.

But you might ask, don’t the New York Times and Wall Street Journal give me all I need? Why do I need a small, hometown newspaper at all? I get the Washington Post at home.

Because you aren’t going to see the New York Times or Washington Post or Wall Street Journal at the School Board meeting. You won’t see them covering the Flower and Garden Show. You certainly aren’t going to see them covering the local high school talent show or the event announcing the latest winery to open.

But you are going to see Loudoun Now at every single one of those events along with everything else happening that is significant in Loudoun County, Virginia. Loudoun Now will always be there, on the ground, giving you the stories that are about our county and the people who live here.

That’s why local, independent, free from outside influence, local newspapers are important. No, wait. essential.

And, oh, by the way, at Loudoun Now there is nobody from the outside influencing us, telling us what to write about. Because we are a local nonprofit, we have no outside investors telling us what to write about, how to write about it, what you should know. We are truly independent to cover Loudoun County Virginia honestly, with integrity and independence.

If you think about it, we really are owned by you!

We write about here because we live here; we work here; we care about here; And here only.

To keep doing that we need your support. We need you, our reader, to consider us important enough to make sure we have what we need to provide what you need and want to know about your county.

Please give to Loudoun Community Media on Give Choose Tuesday.

Yes, it seems strange to get an appeal from a news source. But if you want Loudoun Now to always be there for you, to always tell you the local stories, to always have your local interest at heart – we need you to help us.

Loudoun Now: we live here; we work here; we care about here…and we are always free. Help us stay that way.
